Ayahuasca is a ceremonial tea from Amazonian traditions, typically prepared by brewing the vine Banisteriopsis caapi with leaves of Psychotria viridis (or analogs). The vine’s β-carbolines temporarily inhibit MAO-A; the leaves provide DMT, enabling visionary experiences in carefully held ritual contexts.
Sessions can elevate heart rate and blood pressure, cause nausea/vomiting (“la purga”), and profoundly shift perception. Context, screening, and skilled guidance are essential.
